Trends of using bioplastic products 2023

  • Monday, Day 21/08/2023
  • Bioplastic products of Van Nang Banok always meet the quality criteria in Vietnam. Products from rice plastic, cane tar or starch can meet the current trend of consuming environmentally friendly products.

    What is bioplastic?

Bioplastic is a type of plastic produced from materials available in nature such as cane sugar, rice resin, wheat flour, fat, plants, etc. Bioplastic has many types of degradable good in the natural environment, so it can contribute to reducing the amount of plastic waste released into the environment.

    Classification of bioplastics

    Bioplastics are not biodegradable

It is a type of plastic manufactured from renewable materials. For example, common non-biodegradable plastics such as PP, PS, PE but are produced by fermenting starch from corn, potatoes, cassava, etc.

    Biodegradable plastic

Biodegradable plastic is a type of plastic that can be decomposed into CO2, H20 and humus in the environment with microorganisms.

Some common types of bioplastics are:

    • PLA plastic: This is a plastic composed of many chains of polylactic acid. It is made by fermenting corn starch with a bacterial catalyst. These resins are characterized by high hardness, strength and elasticity. As a result, PLA is widely used in the production of plastic containers, spoons, etc. and some medical products.

    • PHA resin: This is a plastic produced from genetically modified bacteria and plant tissues. PHA is also a type of plastic that is widely used in food packaging products and medical products.

    Benefits of using bioplastic products

    Reduce plastic waste

Bioplastics, whether compostable or not, still contribute to reducing the amount of plastic waste discharged into rivers and seas. Because the production process is a cyclical circle, not exploiting new resources but using natural plant materials, so it is very environmentally friendly.

    Energy saving

According to NatureWorks, a company specializing in the production of bioplastics in the US, producing bioplastics will save two-thirds of the energy compared to producing conventional plastics. From there, it helps to significantly save fossil energy sources that are depleting.

    Decomposes quickly

Bioplastics, if they can be decomposed, will only take a few weeks to a few months, limiting the difficult-to-decompose plastic waste that pollutes the environment.

    Safety for the user

Research shows that biodegradable bioplastics such as PLA and PHA are non-toxic and can be used as food packaging.

Trends in production and consumption of products from bioplastics 2023

Bioplastics currently account for less than 1% of the world's total plastic production, but global demand is expected to grow rapidly. According to the European Bioplastics Association, global production capacity in 2022 will reach 2.21 million tons, up 24% year-on-year. This figure is expected to nearly triple to 6.29 million tons by 2027. Market research firm Zion estimates the global bioplastics market value will grow from $12 billion today to $29 billion by next year. 2028. Depending on the type, bioplastics are on average 50% to 5 times more expensive than petrochemical-derived plastics.

In Vietnam, the trend of consuming bioplastic products in particular and environmentally friendly products in general tends to increase sharply. Especially among young people, they increasingly use paper cups, rice straws, paper bags and bio-plastic products. It is expected that this trend will continue to grow strongly for many years to come.
